A talented junior cricketer, McKenna captained an Australian under 19s tour of Sri Lanka just months before GWS selected him with pick 23 in the 2014 draft. The pick given to GWS for Sam Frost was used to draft McKenna and both men eventually found themselves at the same club.
He was assigned Number 40 in 2017 but did not play seniors due to a hamstring injury. Returned to the Casey Demons side in 2018 and was delisted at the end of the season. Signed with Gisborne again for 2019, and served as a defensive assistant coach for Melbourne's AFLW team from 2019 to 2021.
