The Demons looked sluggish a week after a big win over Collingwood, but eventually won on enemy territory by outmuscling their opponents. South won in the middle of the ground but their forwards couldn't kick a winning score against the Demon defence, Down the other end Melbourne were playing around champion Ron Clegg on their way to goal.
With a six goal lead near three-quarter time the match looked won, but South booted a late goal and when they slammed on four straight to start the last quarter the margin was cut to just seven points. Despite the challenge the visitors regrouped and held on to record a comfortable victory.
The win consolidated Melbourne's spot in the top four at the halfway mark of the season and gave them every chance of returning to the finals after missing out while defending their premiership in 1949.
Mike Woods, Len Dockett and Stan Rule were Melbourne's best. 19th and 20th men were Carlon and Lourey.
