With six games left to play Melbourne further solidified themselves as a finals contender with the come from behind win, but their poor start to the season meant that they were still no certainties of qualifying for the top four. Fans at Victoria Park were treated to a brutal physical battle rather than a high quality match, which left the result in doubt until the last few minutes. It was only two late goals by the Demons which got them over the line for an eighth win in a row, despite missing Shane McGrath and Denis Cordner on interstate duty and Jack Mueller with a thigh injury.
In the first quarter the ball pinballed from one end to the other, with both defences on top. Each side broke through for three goals. The second quarter was also tight, with Collingwood only kicking one goal more to take an eight point lead into half time.
Rain fell in the third quarter as Melbourne snatched the lead and frustrated Magpies players turned to violent measures to try and get the advantage back. The Demons then kicked away in the last quarter.
Despite the win it was Melbourne's second lowest score against Collingwood in the previous 14 years. They had also won on the day where they set their lowest score in that period.
The day was a double celebration for Bob McKenzie, who not only played in a win but was married the same night - thankfully unscathed from his trip to Victoria Park despite being hit on the chest by one of six bottles thrown from the crowd at the umpires. The umpires were also pelted with stones and pieces of wood, and had to be escorted off the ground by police.
Best were Collins, Deane and Ted Cordner. Carlon and Chadwick were 19th and 20th men. Len Toyne was reported for striking but found not guilty.
