Despite University seemingly running away to a comfortable victory in the second half, Melbourne played greatly improved football. It was described as their best performance of the year to date.
With the breeze the students kicked one goal from six scoring shots in the first quarter. Melbourne found more scores with it and thanks to a goal after the siren both teams were locked on 3.5 at half time. At one point during the term a kick Vin Coutie landed the ball on a picket which caused it to burst. A new ball was found and Melbourne kicked two goals in the last few minutes of the second quarter to level the scores.
University were dominant in the third quarter, and their long kicks continually had Melbourne's defence under siege. Whenever the reds attacked University's defenders repelled them and sent the ball forward again. They took a lead of 17 points into the last quarter.
Melbourne more than held their own in the last term as they tried to use their superior weight to break the game open. When they did manage to get through University they found their forwards unable to convert, and both teams only managed behinds for the term.
Best were Coutie, Brereton and McKenzie.
