A convert from soccer, where he had captained Tasmania's Under 16s, O'Toole was assigned number 41 when he joined the Demons, but was delisted before the 1997 season started. Melbourne said they were hoping to pick them again in the rookie draft but O'Toole returned to Tasmania to play with Latrobe. He left then went back to Latrobe in 2007.
