Melbourne failed to stop Carlton from taking the four points home, but spectators were treated to an exciting spectacle which went right down to the last few minutes before the Blues came out on top.
The Reds surprised their more fancied opponents with their tenacity, and it was only Carlton's bigger bodied players which helped them keep the home side at bay and claim victory.
The visitors were famed for their aerial superiority and Melbourne greeted them with a plan, to rise high and thump the ball away whenever possible instead of trying to contest for the mark.
Carlton were unable to break away and always had the plucky Redlegs nipping away at them. The last quarter was played in atmosphere unheard of at a Melbourne game in recent years. The Blues pressed but the defence held firm and gave the forwards a chance to win the match but they were inaccurate in kicking 1.5.
Melbourne won the free kick count 45 to 20, the first seven of which all went to Bill Allen.
Haines was Melbourne's best, along with Tulloh and Coy.
