After finishing school, Walsh gave up football for five years before joining Richmond United. From there he was recruited by VFA club Preston, where he spent two seasons before joining Melbourne's Seconds in early 1934. He was picked for the last three senior games of the season before returning to Preston. That year Walsh was best on ground in Melbourne's Seconds premiership side.
In his first match back at Preston, Walsh suffered a season-ending broken leg. He trained with Footscray in the 1936 pre-season, before returning to Preston. From there he played with General Motors-Holden in 1938 and 1939, then Moe in 1940. He served in the RAAF during World War II, and played for an Air Force representative side in 1942. In 1944 he returned to the VFL, playing one game for Fitzroy at age 33, before returning to Preston again the next year.
Walsh trained with Footscray in the 1936 pre-season. He returned to play one game for Fitzroy in 1944 aged 33., and was at Preston again in 1945.
