Drastically outclassed the Demons resorted to a contentious tactic of kicking the ball along the boundary line at any opportunity, leading to a farcical situation where there was a boundary thrown in on average once a minute.

The tactic didn't help as they were well beaten from the first bounce. Hassa Mann was Melbourne's best but in his 150th game it became so obvious that his teammates were going to go through him at any opportunity that he often had to beat several opponents to get the ball.

Smith tried everything he could to get his side back into the game, constantly sending his runner onto the ground to deliver messages.

Anderson and Dixon were also amongst the best. No replacements were made, so neither first gamer Derek Feldmann nor Rob Dowsing registered a possession. Don Williams had bruised ribs and Rick Feldmann a lacerated skull.
