Peter Keenan was forced to run off the ground to avoid being mobbed by well-wishers at the final siren. He had racked up 20 kicks, 15 marks and 18 hitouts in a dominant performance which helped Melbourne dominate the centre.
Stan Alves returned from injury and took a quarter to find his feet before getting back to his best.
South were completely demoralised and as Greg Wells slammed through the 17th goal in the last quarter many were seen despairingly holding their head in their hands.
Keenan was best on ground, and other good contributors were Flower, Biffin and Clark. Alves and Dullard were replaced by Wilkins and Osborne respectively in the last quarter.
