Recruited by Footscray after an impressive goalkicking run in country football, Carroll only played one game for the Bulldogs. He failed to recapture his pre-VFL form, kicking just 12 goals in four years at Melbourne before moving to Collingwood for three games in 1978.

Secretary of the Past Players and Officials Association in 2003.

Also played for Carlton Reserves, Maffra, Dandenong in 1981, Springvale from 1982 to 1985 and Walpeup. Kicked 118 goals in 1982 and 90 in 1983.
