The midfielder was an important player in a disappointing era at Melbourne. He played five games in his first season, before becoming a regular in 1969. Known under the nickname 'Boner', Clark played 20 games in 1971 before injury restricted him to nine games the following year. A pre-season broken hand cost him the first fortnight of the season, and he missed six more weeks during the year. Clark had more injury trouble in 1973, injuring a thigh muscle in pre-season, then missing five weeks after Round 1.
A broken hand suffered in the 1972 pre-season kept him out for the first fortnight of the year, and he missed a further six weeks with injury during the season. He was stricken with injury again the next year, hurting his thigh muscle in the practice matches and missing the next five weeks after Round 1 due to a hamstring injury.
In 1976 he joined Sandringham in the VFA, where he played 81 games. In 1977 he played in their losing grand final and won the Zebras Best and Fairest. In his last two seasons, 1979 and 1980 he captain/coached the side.
Clark's son Michael played one game in Round 22, 2002
