With their finals chances reduced to the smallest mathematical equation, Melbourne took on a side that had destroyed top of the ladder Sydney by over 100 points the previous week. They kept Port to a relatively low score, but the forward woes that had affected Melbourne all year cost them again. They started the last quarter in front but only kicked one more goal, and were beaten.
Best were Pickett, Gawn and Viney. Jake Melksham replaced Jacob van Rooyen in the fourth quarter. Harrison Petty was fined $3125 for engaging in a melee. Taj Woewodin and Jake Bowey were replaced in the selected side by Jack Billings and Blake Howes respectively due to illness.
