In a game dominated by defence, Carlton had the only goal of the game until the last minute of the first quarter. Melbourne hadn't scored until Ed Langdon marked in the square, cutting the margin to just three after his side had been outplayed early.

The teams remained close together for the next two quarters, before a three goal burst by the Blues at the start of the last term broke the game open. Melbourne rallied with the next two goals, leaving the margin less than one straight kick with several minutes to play. Neither side scored again until a long shot from Christian Petracca with less than a minute left would have put Melbourne ahead, but was called touched by the goal umpire. Video reviews determined that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the original decision, leaving the Demons chasing another goal to win. They had two more inside 50s but couldn't find another score and were beaten.

Best were Viney, Oliver and Petracca. Michael Hibberd replaced James Jordon in the third quarter.
