After a battling defeat against the 1935 minor premiers in their first encounter of the season, the Reds opened their account for season 1936 with a strong win over the visiting Maroons. In fact it was their greatest ever win against Fitzroy to that point.

With more than half of the outer closed for renovations the small crowd were forced into one end of the ground. To minimise wasted time recovering balls from the construction area it was one of the first games played with two balls.

Melbourne's best player was Les Jones, who repeated the tagging job he'd done on champion Haydn Bunton in 1935.

Before the match Melbourne's 1935 Seconds pennant was unfurled by the wife of committeeman S.Brownbill.
