After their season was almost officially finished with their loss a week earlier, the Reds went to Brunswick Street as underdogs but rebounded to a hard fought win over the highly fancied, fourth placed Maroons. Part of their success came from close attention paid to champion Haydn Bunton, shadowed all day by Les Jones, and a physical approach across the side.
Fitzroy started quickly, opening up a lead of almost three goals in the first quarter but Melbourne rebounded with a six goal second to take a 13 point advantage into half time. They continued their strong form with five goals in the third quarter and withstood a minor comeback by the home side in the last quarter after the visitors had opened up a seven goal lead.
Best for Melbourne was Les Jones. Longhurst was injured.
