The Demon charge towards the finals continued apace with another shock victory, their first against Carlton since 1971, and just their 5th in 19 at VFL Park.

Melbourne were wasteful and 5.19 to 5.8 at three-quarter time could have proven fatal if the Blues had managed to fire in the last quarter, but six goals in the last quarter alone delivered a victory that kept the Demons in with a remote chance of cracking the five. They had risen to 8th but were now just a game outside the five, and while their percentage wasn't healthy it was still comparable to the other sides around them.

Image Stan Alves, Greg Wells and Carl Ditterich were best, while Keenan and Hardeman dominated in the air. It was a double celebration for Hardeman, whose wife had given birth to a daughter during the week. Hurst and Lyons were unused reserves.
