Invited to Melbourne after playing seniors in the Federal League, Giampaolo graduated from the Under 19s and won their Best and Fairest before making his senior debut in 1973. The rover battled persistent knee problems during his career, and after finishing runner-up in the 1977 Reserves Best and Fairest he joined Sandringham the next year. He won their best and fairest in 1978 and played 50 games for the Zebras over three seasons.
Giampaolo moved to Manangatang in 1981 and became captain/coach. He served for five seasons, then coached in Ballarat and Charlton. Coached Terang in 1985.
