Melbourne got the jump on their fellow top four contenders with four goals to nil early in the opening term. By quarter time they still led by 17 points, before Brisbane recovered and cut the gap to a point at half time. The third term was all Brisbane, kicking seven goals to four, then the first goal of the last quarter to take a 26 point lead. Premature attempts to shut the game down cost the Lions, who conceded the last four goals. Jack Viney gave his side a chance to win by snatching a goal from a stoppage in the dying minutes, before Jake Melksham marked with a set shot in the last minute. He converted to put his side ahead by a goal.
With just seconds left at the bounce, Brisbane managed to get the ball forward but were denied a mark by Jake Lever on the siren and fell short.
Best were Petracca, Gawn and Brayshaw. Joel Smith replaced Harrison Petty (rib injury) in the third quarter.
