A last-round dead rubber match between two sides out of finals contention was the last chance to gain something from a poor season.
In a poor game Chris Aitken was Melbourne's best, with five goals that gave supporters hope that he'd be a full-forward option in 1968. He was one of the few to master the windy conditions.
Essendon had a chance to win the game in the last minute when Geoff Gosper kicked towards an open goal. His shot rolled left of the post, though, and the match was lost.
Best were Aitken, Williams and Leahy. Smith (bruised back and chest) was replaced by Hardeman in the third quarter. Townend (ankle) was replaced by K. Osborne in the third quarter. Alves pulled a hamstring.
