Originally debuting in the Under 19s 1964 premiership year, the brother of Brian and John Leahy was first senior listed in 1965 but did not play a match, before winning the Best and Fairest in his real rookie season the next year - the youngest B&F winner in club history at 19 years and 354 days.
Despite the victory he played just eight games in 1967, and along with Graeme Jacobs was dismissed by the Demons at the end of that year as a "disciplinary measure" after a trip to Queensland.
Originally both linked to Carlton, the two sacked Demons moved to South Melbourne instead, where Leahy played three seasons before being dumped shortly before the start of the 1971 season.
He then took a role as playing coach of Grong Grong Matong in the South-West League. In 1972 he played for New South Wales against the VFL Seconds, and in 1974 took over Queanbeyan, before coaching Benalla in 1975.
