July 1887 match vs Essendon

Saturday 30 July - Friendly Societies Ground
Crowd: 300-600

Melbourne 2.3, 3.3, 3.3, 3.3
Essendon 0.3, 0.9, 1.9, 1.12

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goals: Burns 1, Garton 1, Everett 1

In pouring rain only a handful of spectators were in place to see the visitors attack strongly first but only come up with behinds.

Once Melbourne had settled with the use of the wind they worked the ball forward and scored the opening goal through Murphy. Another immediately followed from a scramble in front of goal. They continued to attack for the rest of the quarter but for no further reward.

Essendon had the best of the second quarter but were wasteful in kicking nine behinds while Melbourne used their only chance to boot a major through Smith and increase their lead to three.

The visitors got their only goal during the third term, keeping Melbourne scoreless for rest of the game but only managing behinds in the last quarter to lose.

Notes
Some sources have the quarter time score 2.1
