With their finals position confirmed the Demons still needed to win to stay in front in the race for a top two position. They started well, opening up a 33 point lead at quarter time and winning easily despite conceding six goals to two in the third quarter.
A dominant performance in the centre of the ground helped the Demons to victory and Allan La Fontaine was his side's best despite a recent motor vehicle accident.
Collingwood's loss to Carlton at Princes Park meant that the Demons could no longer drop out of the top two and had earned a double chance. Instead of sitting on the edge of a knockout final they instead went into the last round with a chance of finishing top.
Along with La Fontaine, Melbourne's best were Lock and Gibb.
