Despite two straight losses by more than a hundred points Melbourne could still kept the heat on the second last Geelong in the battle for the wooden spoon with a win. They fell well short, but at least for the first time in three weeks they weren't beaten by a massive margin.

It looked like another ugly performance was on the cards when they were five goals down at quarter time, but if they'd kicked better than 1.7 in the second quarter when Geelong added just one point they might have been even closer. Their faulty goalkicking hurt them, but a tricky northerly wind blowing across the ground confused players from both teams at times.

Geelong kicked away after the long break, and despite kicking into the wind in the last quarter they extended their lead. Despite Melbourne's improved play around the field they were handicapped again by their malfunctioning forward line.

With just one game to play it became clear to most people that Melbourne were unlikely to register a win in season 1919.

Tonkin, Haines and Allen were best. Allen suffered a leg injury.

Notes
A player called 'Warrington' is referred to in reports. This is likely a misprint of Boddington.
