Biggest loss and lowest score at Marrara

Melbourne's fifth visit to Darwin to play for premiership points saw their worst result yet. Unlike their first trip to the Northern Territory for the year where they had pushed premiership contender Port Adelaide until deep in the last quarter, the Demons had no match for Fremantle.

The Dockers absorbed five minutes of pressure at the start of the match where Melbourne's misfiring forward line were unable to capitalise on a number of scoring opportunities. The Demons were ultimately kept goalless for the quarter, and only managed one for the half courtesy of a running goal from Dean Kent.

Kent's goal sparked his side, but two more opportunities were missed and the Dockers took advantage by kicking three goals in a row to end the quarter. For the third week in four the Demons were down by 30+ points early in the third quarter, but this time there was no coming back to make the game interesting.

Five Freo goals in a row to end the quarter destroyed any resistance, and while the Demons managed to restrict their opponents to two goals in the last quarter it was a disappointing night which left them on track to be the lowest scoring side in a 22 game season.

Best were McDonald, M. Jones and Viney. Dom Barry replaced Max Gawn during the third quarter.
