Norm Smith entered the week under an injury cloud having missed the second half of the Round 15 loss to Carlton with heart troubles, and then being admitted to hospital during the week. He failed to recover to coach his side against Footscray and John Beckwith took the reigns. It was lucky that he didn't show up because his team served up a thriller.

In a poor quality game for the first three and a half quarters the Demons looked the better side, but then the rain came - finally giving the teams an excuse to play badly - and the Dogs took their chance to grab the lead. With two minutes to go the visitors hit the lead, but there was still drama to be had.

Footscray had snatched victory in the dying seconds of the Round 5 clash, and Melbourne repaid the favour in their second meeting for the year. Ken Emselle snapped a miracle goal over his head during the last minute to give the Demons victory and repay the favour to the Dogs for the Round 5 thriller.

Melbourne's season was over, but at least they had opened up a game and a half break on 8th placed North Melbourne.

Best were Tassie Johnson, Stan Alves and Frank Davis. Fowler (dislocated shoulder) was replaced by Leahy in the first quarter. Barrie Vagg was an unused reserve. Peter Smith suffered a bruised chest.
