After getting their season back on track a week earlier with a narrow win over Essendon, the Demons crashed to another defeat in a high scoring match at Princes Park and slipped from first to third on the ladder.

Wind the wind Melbourne jumped to a great start with two goals in the first minute before Carlton had touched the ball, but the home side soon steadied and used their aerial advantage to get back in the game. Each side kicked 6.4 in the first quarter, and the Blues won from there but could have had a bigger victory if they kicked straight. In the last three quarters they booted 10.20 to 8.4 but their 18 extra scoring shots only translated into a win of just under three goals. Wrout was Carlton's chief offender, kicking 4.10.

Carlton were the better side in the second quarter but Melbourne stayed in touch with two goals at the end of the quarter to cut the margin to five points. It took 15 minutes for the Blues to get their first goal of the third quarter, but when they did it provoked an avalanche of five in a row which opened a 30 point lead. Melbourne barely reduced the gap to 27 going into the last quarter, and they tried to mount a comeback in the last term but even their accurate kicking didn't help them. Two goals early in the last cut the margin, and when Gibb goalled with 15 minutes to play the game was back under three goals.

Despite the loss, and Carlton's many scoring shots, it was Melbourne's best performance for weeks. The improved performance came despite an injury which nullified Allan La Fontaine early in the match, and another which put Ron Baggott out of the game during the second quarter. Without Baggott to marshal their attack, their opportunities on goal were poorly constructed.

Roberts, Jones and Fischer were best.
