Despite opening the season with eight straight wins the Demons would have damaged their chances of finishing in the top four if they had lost to Essendon.
They weren't convincing, but Melbourne did enough to get past the visitors and get their season back on track. In wasn't an impressive match, and Melbourne lacked the fire they'd had early in the season.
The Demons played the last quarter without Frank Roberts, who had struggled to the end of the third term despite his injury. Without Roberts, who had been strong in defence, Essendon made a comeback but were too far behind to bridge the gap.
Beames, Chandler and Ogden were best. Harry Long was reported for elbowing but found not guilty.
