Nicknamed "Ticka", Roberts started his career as a forward at St Kilda in 1933 but returned to Sandhurst to coach for two seasons after leaving the Junction Oval. Spotted in a Grand Final where Melbourne's scouts didn't know about his league past, the Demons gave him another shot at the big time in 1936 and he was an instant hit with 18 games in his first season.
After 44 goals with the Saints, Roberts added just 5 at the Demons, and none after 1937. Converted into a defender he was one of the best players on ground off a half-back flank in the 1939 Grand Final, before playing at full-back in the 1940 edition. He initially failed to appear at the start of 1941, returning to play his first game of the year in Round 3 but only had seven more appearances.

Notes
Some sources list his nickname as "Tickle", and his year of death as 1990. Herald says he went back to St Kilda after coaching Sandhurst first before joining Melbourne and that he was a 'world champion sprinter'.
