After a shock win over top of the table Essendon a week earlier the Demons fancied themselves against Richmond but were blown away by a seven goal Tiger burst in the second quarter. They started well, kicking the first two goals through Fanning. Richmond soon cancelled them out, and added another to take the lead. A late goal by Mueller levelled the scores.

After a rugged opening to the second term, Richmond took control and broke through the Demon defence. Even a late Melbourne goal was soon replied to, and the margin was 40 points at the long break.

The move of Lenne to the wing in the third quarter sparked the Demons, but their forwards were initially unable to capitalise. Melbourne's defence kept Richmond from scoring, and eventually the visitors eked out out a four goal to one quarter to cut the margin to 28.

Richmond kicked the first goal of the last quarter, before two quick replies cut the gap to 17. Mueller had a chance to further reduce the margin with an easy shot but missed. Melbourne had held their own in the second half, but they were too far behind and Richmond went on to win comfortably.

Best were Mueller, Lenne and La Fontaine. 19th man Walsh replaced Archibald (injured) during the first quarter.
