A fourth loss in a row all but ruined any chance Melbourne had of making the finals. Despite their recent poor form a large crowd showed up to see the match, and they witnessed the red forwards again kicking themselves out of the game with poor shooting on goal.

They dominated the first half, and it looked like they'd run away with victory during the second quarter, but having managed just two goals from 10 shots on goal they were vulnerable to Carlton getting their act together. With a damp ground and a slippery ball Carlton finally clicked and booted 4.2 to 0.1 in the third term. THey continued to be the superior team in the last quarter.

Best were Langley, Young and Strong.
