A week before the Bulldogs had won their second match of the year against minor premiership contender Hawthorn. Their only other win had been against the Demons so confidence in their camp was high. However the Demons had flogged Geelong by more than ten goals so they weren't short on self belief either.

Despite being a see-sawing contest which had seen the lead change at every quarter the game hit no great heights until the last quarter. Simon Beasley levelled the score at the 16 minute mark only to see Brian Wilson go down the other end and wrest the lead back after a pair of bounces.

The Dogs hit back again at the 22 minute mark before Chris Connolly kicked the winner two minutes later. The match went on another seven minutes and the Demons grimly held on to their narrow lead. They had won three in a row, it was heady times.

Best were Johnson, O'Sullivan and Battiston. Gaunt suffered a bruised calf.
