After four wins in a row got their season back on track, Melbourne's loss a week earlier left them desperately needing to beat the Saints to keep their finals hopes alive. They led at every change and withstood a comeback by the Saints in the last quarter to hold on to victory.
The quality of the game was affected by a blustery wind, and the first score didn't come for 11 minutes. Melbourne ended the opening term a goal ahead, and continued to build their lead across the first three quarters. By the last change they had 75 more possessions than St Kilda and led by six goals. The Saints kicked seven goals to four in the last term to keep things interesting.
Melbourne received the Nick Schernickau Cup for winning the game. He was a marketing executive at Tooheys, sponsor of both sides, who died in a helicopter accident two years before. Jim Stynes was given the Tony Waddell Trophy for best on ground, named after another victim of the same helicopter crash.
Best were Smith, Seecamp and Stynes
