Drafted after playing senior football towards the end of his last season with South Adelaide, Sampson showed some promise in his two seasons at Melbourne before being traded to Adelaide for Nick Pesch
He won a Premiership in his first season at the Crows after breaking into the side late in the year, but missed their second flag the year after and then moved to Richmond for another two seasons before ending his career.
Returned to South Adelaide for the 2001 season and played on until 2008 when he retired and was appointed as an assistant coach. Midway through the year he was thrust into the top job when Jack Cahill resigned, and was signed as coach until the end of the 2009 season where he was removed after a 9th place finish.
He was appointed coach of the Myponga/Sellicks team in SA’s Great Southern Football League for 2010 where he remained until 2015.
