Drafted after playing senior football towards the end of his last season with South Adelaide, Sampson showed some promise in his two seasons at Melbourne before being traded to Adelaide for Nick Pesch.

Sampson won a Premiership in his first season at the Crows after breaking into the side late in the year, but missed their 1998 flag and moved to Richmond. He played two seasons for the Tigers before ending his VFL career. He returned to South Adelaide for the 2001 season and played on until 2008 when he was appointed an assistant coach. Midway through that year he was thrust into the top job when Jack Cahill resigned, signing on as coach until the end of 2009. He was sacked at the end of that season after finishing ninth, moving on to coaching Myponga/Sellicks team in South Australia's Great Southern Football League, remaining there from 2010 until 2015.
