After a fast start to the season, Carlton had suffered surprise mid-year losses to Fitzroy and Sydney, while the Demons started poorly but had worked their way back to an outside finals chance. Despite six goals from Garry Lyon, Melbourne missed the chance to make up further ground on the top eight against undermanned opposition.

Lyon's hot form as Melbourne's spearhead continued, he had four goals in the first quarter and one early in the second. He didn't kick another until the dying minutes, by which time he'd been forced up the ground to try and find possessions to keep his side in the game.

The margin was still under a goal late in the third quarter before Carlton goalled, taking advantage of Jim Stynes going off under the blood rule. It was three points the difference midway through the last term when a controversial free kick against David Neitz led to the ball bouncing down the other end for a decisive goal to Earl Spalding. No team had kicked more than three goals in a row, but Carlton then booted four straight to win comfortably.

Neil Balme said, "We battled, we made mistakes, we weren't really on top of it, but I thought we hung in there pretty well and gave ourselves a real chance".

Best were Prymke, Viney and Wight. Jeff Hilton was suspended for three matches on video evidence for striking Dean Rice. Hilton's defence was that Rice had thrown a 'haymaker' at him first, but the umpire gave evidence that Rice had told him "he whacked me in the gob".
