The former Tasmanian Under 17 cricketer was overlooked in two drafts before being recommended to Melbourne by assistant Chris Fagan, who had previously coached Beams at the Tassie Mariners. He spent 1998 in the Reserves, before being called off the rookie list in early 1999. Beams kicked three goals in his second game and played 11 games for the year.

Beams struggled to consolidate himself in 2000, battling back and hamstring problems to play just six home and away games. He played in a Sandringham VFL premiership, and a week later was called into the Grand Final as a late replacement for Cameron Bruce. Beams hadn't played seniors since breaking his arm in Round 14, and his Grand Final was an unhappy one, not registering a possession in 15 minutes of playing time.

Beams started 2001 season brightly, one of the side's best in the pre-season, but after playing the first two games of the year only managed three more and was delisted. He then joined the Tasmanian VFL team, playing for them until 2006 and serving as captain. In 2007 and 2008 he was playing coach of Myrtleford. Coached University in the Tasmanian Old Scholars League in 2009 and Glenorchy in 2012 and 2013. Returned to University as a player in 2014 and 2015.

In 2014, Beams was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
