A battle between the defending premier and a surging Collingwood who had won nine games in a row, most by less than two goals, was further livened up by a pre-match radio interview where Ed Langdon suggested they were one dimensional. Langdon was a focus of Pies players early, but they allowed the Demons to get a jump on them and lead by 23 points early in the second quarter. Melbourne had given away several leads during the year, and this was another example. They stayed in front until midway through a tight last quarter, grabbing the lead back twice before finally conceding it for good. It left them needing to win their last two games to guarantee a top four finish.

Best were Oliver, Petracca and Gawn. James Harmes was an unused substitute.
