The Demons bounced back from their first loss of the season despite Norm Smith kicking 0.7. They might have kicked themselves out of the contest, but the tight hold the Melbourne defence had on the home side allowed them to be wasteful without cost.

Fitzroy went in as favourites, but conceded first goal in the opening seconds through Beames. They were wasteful for the rest of the quarter, kicking four goals from 11 scoring shots. Fitzroy launched a number of attacks early, but often ran into Jack Mueller in defence. They kicked five goals to two in the third quarter, their best of the day, but were too far behind to make an impact in the last term.

Best were Mueller, La Fontaine and Ogden.

Notes
The Age reported Fitzroy 'drew level with Melbourne just before the interval', which is contrary to official records.
