Melbourne's eight game winning streak to start the season finally came unstuck after conceding a five goal lead to their visitors at quarter time.

The home side made five changes to their winning side, including the introduction of two club debutants, and it didn't work. However most of the changes were enforced, and they were missing some of their best players like La Fontaine, Gibb and Wartman. The inclusions of Chandler and Penberthy after long breaks was criticised by fans, and neither performed to expectation. The latter was hampered by a thigh injury early in the game, and limped off in the last quarter.

The Demons also had a number of players under an injury cloud, including Roberts, Smith and Ogden, and were coming off a six day break after playing Round 8 1937 the previous Monday. They got the first goal of the day, before conceding the next six to quarter time.

The Demons struck back in the second quarter, kicking four quick goals to get back within one kick of the Pivotonians, but that was as close as they got. By half time the visitors were were back to 21 points in front. The margin was out to 44 at the last change, with Melbourne playing like a beaten team unable to mount another comeback.

After moving Mueller to centre half-forward, where Murnane had been well beaten, Melbourne narrowly won the last quarter, but lost the game comfortably. They stayed top of the ladder, a game clear of Collingwood.

Melbourne's best were Fischer, Ogden and Mueller. 19th man Gordon Jones replaced the injured Penberthy (leg injury) in the last quarter. Chandler was also troubled after receiving a heavy knock early. Truscott was a late replacement for La Fontaine who had a shoulder injury.
