Nicknamed 'Cactus', Coolahan was promoted from the Seconds to play three games in 1937. He remained with the club in early 1938, and after a suggestion he was returning to Mortlake he joined Footscray. He played 12 games total for them, including in the 1938 finals.
Coolahan returned to Mortlake as coach in 1940.
