Recruited by Hawthorn from the adjoining suburb of Camberwell in 1931, Chandler made his league debut that year. He remained with the Mayblooms until 1936 when he moved to the WAFL and captain/coached Swan Districts.
Returning to Victoria for family reasons after a year he turned down an approach from Carlton and joined the Redlegs for 1937. Chandler was set to coach Trafalgar, but when Melbourne came to Hawthorn with an offer of a player swap he was refused a clearance to the country. The Demons gave Bill Deague, Ken Feltscheer and Gordon Waters to Hawthorn to finalise the deal. Keith Truscott was said to be part of the deal but remained at Melbourne.
After playing 11 games in his first season the full-back missed the Semi Final against Geelong with German Measles. He returned for the Preliminary Final, but the Demons lost and it would be his last game.
After being linked with Swan Districts again at the end of 1937, and being elected to their committee, he was cleared back to Perth to captain/coach South Fremantle in April 1938. He became an accomplished full forward in his second stint, booting 120 goals in 1938. He later made two appearances for Western Australia.
His brother Dick played two games at Hawthorn in 1931 and one at Carlton in 1940. His uncle Newton Chandler played for Carlton.
