Behind Daisy Pearce and vice-captain Karen Paxman, the leadership group included Tyla Hanks, Libby Birch, Maddie Gay, Sarah Lampard, Lily Mithen and Kate Hore.

The competition returned to one ladder after the previous use of A and B conferences. In a season extended to nine games for the first time, Melbourne won their last four home and away games to qualify for the finals, they made the Preliminary Final before being defeated.

Fixtures were regularly altered due to COVID19 related travel restrictions. Melbourne was originally scheduled to play St Kilda in Round 3 before the opposition became North Melbourne. For the rest of the season the fixture was gradually announced. They won four matches in a row to qualify for their second consecutive finals series, making it to the Preliminary Final before being eliminated.

In Round 8, Jane Lange coached the side in place of Michael Stinear, who was waiting the birth of his child.

Tyla Hanks was named the AFLW's Rising Star for the season.
