Owens was recruited after winning Chelsea's 1972 best and fairest, and played the most number of games ever for the club without a win. A change in VFL recruiting zones to include Chelsea in the metropolitan area meant that instead of the $1000 country clubs got when their players made the big time, they only got $200 after he played six games.

Joined Sandringham in 1976 and played 14 games in his one season there before returning to Chelsea as coach for two seasons. He was intended to be a playing coach but Sandringham refused to clear him. In 1978 he took out a Supreme Court writ against the VFA’s Permit Board for blocking his move.
