Matched up against a side three wins better off than them for the season Melbourne were handicapped by the absence of important players like Moodie, Langley, Parkin, Herring and Moriarty - the less of Moodie felt the most keenly amongst the rucks.

St Kilda had their own problems with injury and kicking against the wind in the first quarter they quickly found themselves two goals goals behind. When the sides switched ends at quarter time Melbourne couldn't manage a score but made life appropriately difficult for the opposition and only went into half time seven points behind.

As the breeze dropped away in the third quarter St Kilda played their best football of the day, opening up an big lead going into the last term. Melbourne tried hard in the last quarter but their forward play was poor and they were only able to shave three points off the lead by the final bell.

Best were Purse, Young and McKellar.
