After two consecutive wins the Demons went to Windy Hill hoping to stamp themselves as the big improvers of 1975, but the best they could do was a credible loss to the Bombers.
It could have been different, 14 minutes into the second quarter Ross Brewer kicked his third goal to extend Melbourne's lead to 23 points. The Bombers kicked three goals to close the margin to a goal, and by the 10 minute mark of the third term were three goals of their own in front.
The Demons only had themselves to blame for some shocking blunders, including Peter Keenan collecting the ball in the back pocket and handballing blindly over his head to the square, where the ball landed in the arms of an Essendon player for a simple goal. Melbourne won the last quarter to keep it interesting but were too far behind to challenge.
Brewer was his side's lone forward, and neither Anthony Dullard or Kim Smith could add more than one goal.
Best were Brewer, Fowler and Ditterich. Ditterich was reported for striking and suspended for four matches. Alves (bruised shoulder) was replaced by Carroll in the second quarter. Lyons (eye) was replaced by Owens in the last quarter.
