From: North Adelaide, Selection #55, 1986 National Draft

Melbourne's final selection at the first AFL Draft had no interest in crossing to Victoria and was lost to the Demons when their hold expired on him at the end of 1989. During 1987 Robert Flower and Cameron Schwab had visited Darren, and his brother Andrew, in South Australia to convince them to sign but were unsuccessful.

Despite media reports that he was set to join the Brisbane Bears - who had drafted Andrew - neither Jarman went North. Both Jarman brothers played against Melbourne for North Adelaide in the 1986 Fosters Cup.

He would eventually cross to Melbourne and join Hawthorn in 1991 before crossing back to Adelaide to play in two premierships.
