Career statistics

Melbourne's final selection at the first AFL Draft had no interest in crossing to Victoria and was lost to the Demons when their hold expired on him at the end of 1989. During 1987 Robert Flower and Cameron Schwab had visited Darren, and his brother Andrew, in South Australia to convince them to sign but were unsuccessful. They continued to court him throughout 1989 but to no avail.

Despite media reports that he was set to join the Brisbane Bears - who had drafted Andrew - neither Jarman went North. Both Jarman brothers played against Melbourne for North Adelaide in the 1986 Fosters Cup.

He would eventually cross to Victoria and was traded by the Bears to Hawthorn for their first round draft pick in 1991. The deal was made after the Adelaide side entered the competition, but before they were able to sign players. Jarman eventually went back to Adelaide and won two premierships.
