Essendon coach Denis Pagan had been linked to Melbourne's vacant senior job, and in his 10th consecutive Grand Final appearance in the lower grades, he did his cause no harm by leading the Bombers to victory.
Melbourne got the first two goals of the game, but a seven goal to one blitz in the second quarter set up victory for the Bombers. They were slowed in the third term and only added eight points to the lead, but it was more than enough for a side much fresher after a week off. David Neitz kicked two in the last quarter as Melbourne recovered from a 63 point deficit with the final five goals of the game.
Best were Febey, Eishold and Neitz.
