After winning a TFL premiership with the all-conquering 1990 Hobart side, Lamprill joined Melbourne with the third of the club's four first round picks. He had played as a forward in Tasmania, but the club also saw him as a potential half-back.

Lamprill kicked a sensational goal with his first kick, but a knee injury ended his debut season after four games. He then struggled to find a spot in the team, playing just 10 games in his first three seasons. In 1994 he was restricted to four games again by a groin complaint.

He played the bulk of his games in 1995 and 1996, settling into a defensive role after being used in various positions around the ground, but only appeared across three consecutive weeks in late 1997, before a broken collarbone in Round 21 ended his season. He was delisted at the end of the year and joined Vermont, captain/coaching them from 2001 to 2003, before coaching Hobart in 2006 and 2007.
