First Game
Graeme Yeats
In a game with little to recommend it, it was Fitzroy and Garry Wilson who provided the entertainment in the third quarter with a burst which drew the Lions from 13 points behind to 17 points in front.
As was so often the case Robert Flower provided the inspiration for the Demons with two goals in the first eight minutes of the last term to steady his side. He'd been forced to rest in the forward pocket all day because of an injured leg and kicked his second with a miraculous over the shoulder snap to extend the lead to eight points..
Best for Melbourne were Zantuck, Giles and Moore. Danny Hughes suffered a dislocated finger.
It was Melbourne's last match at the Junction Oval, though they would return to train at the venue for the next 25 years.
