Thorne graduated from Melbourne's Under 19s to play eight games in 1978, before his season was ended by a knee injury in Round 11. He started 1979 in the Under 19s, and returned to the senior side in Round 7, before a persistent groin injury kept him out until Round 15. He kicked six goals on return, but played four more games before the end of the year then left the club. After two years in the VFA with Prahran, Thorne spent two seasons at East Perth in 1982 and 1983.

Thorne returned to Melbourne in 1984, kicking 17 goals for the season. His best performance was a seven goal haul against Footscray in Round 9, 1984. Another knee injury restricted him to one game in the second half of the season. At the end of that year Thorne returned to the WAFL with Claremont, where he was best in their 1987 Grand Final victory. He won his second Simpson Medal as WA's best player in a 1988 match against the VFA. At the end of 1989 he was still negotiating a contract with Claremont and told the club that if they couldn't come to an agreement he would retire, then read in the newspaper that Claremont had announced his retirement. They mended the rift and Thorne returned for 1990, winning sselection for the Western Australia state squad that year.

Coached Subiaco in 1997 and 1998.
