Played two seasons with Melbourne after graduating through the Under 19s, but other than six goals against South Melbourne in Round 10, 1979 he made little impact due to a persistent groin injury.

The rover moved to East Perth for four seasons in the WAFL via two years in the VFA with Prahran. He returned to Melbourne in 1984, kicking 17 goals for the season. His best performance was a seven goal haul against Footscray in Round 9, 1984.

At the end of that year Thorne returned to the WAFL with Claremont, where he was best in their 1987 Grand Final victory. He won his second Simpson Medal as WA's best player in a 1988 match against the VFA. He came out of retirement to play in 1989, before giving up the game for good at the end of that year.

In 1997 Thorne became the coach of Subiaco but was fired before the 1999 season.
