A week after earning their second win of the year, Melbourne went back to their losing ways, but did so with an honourable defeat.

The heavy ground slowed both sides down, but Collingwood played with a better system and opened up a lead of almost five goals at the long break. At half time Melbourne looked like going down to a big defeat, with the players standing off from the play, kicking badly and fumbling easy marks. They then stormed back into the game in the third term, kicking a goal in the opening seconds and then adding five more to cut the lead to three at the last break.

It looked like the match would be close, but Collingwood ran away with an easy win from there. Their defence held firm, holding the Reds without a goal for the rest of the match.

Best were Brereton, Monk and Harris.
